Breathe in Nature: Endless Vistas

A visual meditation using an aerial sunset view in the Pacific Northwest that looks out over water carving through land into a darkening sky.

Have you ever wanted to fly? I don’t mean in an airplane. I mean with your body, sailing up through endless vistas to wherever your heart desires.

This past week I had a conversation with a friend who has recurring dreams she can fly. The idea of it took my breath away and filled my mind and spirit with joy. That conversation inspired this week’s Breathe in Nature post.

Photo taken somewhere over the Pacific Northwest.

Shall we give it a try?

Come with me as we leap effortlessly from the ground and soar into the deepening blues for a sunset view like no other. The earth and sky roll out in endless vistas. Ancient waters carve through ancient lands to create a trail that leads us into the boundless beyond. The sinking sun, combined with the shadows of dusk, paints the world in denim blue, saffron orange, steel gray, and soothing black. It’s so quiet up here. There is a stillness, unlike anything we could experience on land. All our worries and fears shrink against the vastness before us. We are free and safe.

Up, Up, and Away, My Beautiful Balloon

The closest I have ever come to this experience of flying is in a hot air balloon. For my fortieth birthday, and later with my mother-in-law who longed to experience the thrill, I took to the skies in a basket, sailing over the Sonoran Desert. The vistas were indeed endless and magnificent. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

The balloon behind me is begins to inflate for our flight.

If you have ever wanted to experience this but haven’t yet, I encourage you to set aside your fears, save your pennies, and go for it. You can find a reputable hot air balloon company near you by Googling it and reading reviews. You may also want to check with the Better Business Bureau.

If you’d rather keep two feet planted on the ground but find hot air balloons intriguing, consider taking in a balloon festival. As the colorful balloons fill the bright blue sky, you can imagine the limitless possibilities above you, and in this way, sense the grandness of the planet we call home. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, New Mexico is the best-known here in the States. They’re scheduled to take flight in October!

Whether you take to the skies or stay firmly planted, I hope your week ahead brings endless vistas that delight your eyes, calm your mind, and release your spirit.

  1. Oh, wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could fly? I once had a flying dream myself. It was many years ago, before I even met Jos, and I still remember it vividly. A balloon flight is still on my bucket list. I’m still plucking up the courage as I do suffer from vertigo! xxx

    1. It would be wonderful to fly, Ann! To dream about it seems like the next best thing. It’s no wonder that dream is still with you–such a soulful delight.

For what it’s worth, mother-in-law suffers from vertigo as well. She took a motion sickness pill, like meclizin (sp?), and didn’t have any problems! Just a bug for your ear, in case the opportunity for a balloon ride presents itself. 💕

I have flying dreams, too, and they’re amazing! I’ve become quite jealous of birds. My dreams are so vivid that I carry with me a sense of what flying must feel like – yet I’m unable to leave the ground. Maybe in another life . . .

    1. That is so cool, Kelli! I just imagine your lungs filling with that fresh air and the world opening up beneath you. It seems like it would be such an exhilarating experience. Dreaming about flying–a moment when your brain convinces you this is really happening and you can feel it all the way to the tips of your toes–even though we can’t actually leave the ground, I can’t help but feel this is a real gift you have. 💕
