Breathe in Nature: Muir Woods

By now we’ve all heard how good it is for our bodies and minds to go outdoors and experience nature. The pandemic made this challenging for some, and sometimes it’s a challenge just because life is what it is.

Even if you can’t get out in nature, spending time gazing at a picture of it can have some benefit to your brain. That’s what this little window is about–to provide a space to breathe in nature, even if you’re stuck indoors for whatever reason. For a few minutes, you can gaze upon a glorious redwood tree in Muir Woods National Forest and let go.

Meditation:

If you can, take a few minutes to look at the photo and imagine yourself breathing in the fresh air. It’s a perfect day. Birds are singing songs to one another across the canopy. A soft breeze brushes your cheeks and makes you feel safe, at home. These trees that have been here for hundreds of years reach tall. In their height and strength, they allow you to let go. In this moment, they are here for you and you can relax.

Muir Woods has been a national monument since 1908. This old growth forest is filled with coast redwoods and is a stone’s throw across the Golden Gate Bridge, north of San Francisco. I felt beautifully small in the grandeur of their presence when I visited in 2011. All I had to do while there was be. Those trees and all the life around me–they were in charge and I was, for a moment, a child embraced into their marvelous care. I didn’t want to leave. 🙂
