Breaking News! Missing blogger found in the 1970s!
After weeks of broadcast silence, Sherry Dryja, also known as Petite Over 40, was thought missing from the blogosphere. Readers last saw her travel through time to practice outfit magic with a glittery puffin and a renegade penguin on the set of the 1960s hit tv show Bewitched. With no news for weeks, it was believed she was caught in a witchy vortex of her own design.
But lo! She merely made a pitstop in the 1970s to pick up some flared jeans and a wicked striped dolman top. Cue ABBA!
Dolman Top Rocks the Casbah
Although the song “Rock the Casbah” didn’t come out until 1982, and this top is more 1970s inspired, one can’t help but think the design does indeed rock the casbah, and everywhere else for that matter.
Designed and crafted in the modern era by Sarah Bibb of Folly in Portland, Sherry swooped up her size as soon as she found it at Sassafras in Seattle. It’s also available online here.
Skinny jeans are so 2010. 😎
Skinny jeans are still a staple in Sherry’s wardrobe but traveling through time brought on cravings for change. The flares shown below are just the ticket. Originally from Anthropologie, her Pilcro and the Letterpress jeans aren’t officially vintage either, but DANG do they look the part!

Le Freak, C’est Chic
Don’t freak out. (Or DO, if you’re into that sort of thing.) Sherry is still traveling through time in search of treasures to share.
Okay. She’s not really time traveling. And it’s odd to write about her in third person, but she is busy with summer visitors and not able to spend much time in front of the computer. She’ll be back as soon as possible with more treasures, both vintage and modern!

Sherry, I remember wearing those jeans…well, not those specifically, but certainly ones like them and I absolutely loved them. However, now I am stuck in the skinny jean vortex! Ha, ha. Time to break out the flares once again or at least buy a pair. That top is adorable and looks mah-vah-lous on you, darlink! Thanks for posting! – Amy

The skinny jean vortex is indeed difficult to climb out of. I still struggle with it–they’ve been such constant companions for so many years! I’d love to see your flares when and if you do decide to break them out. Thank you for stopping by and saying hello!!
Hugs, Sherry
Ahem….I just saw Mama Mia II this weekend so, trust me, Dancing Queen is full on in my head.
For someone not yet born, you are doing a stellar job channeling the seventies. Honestly, the only thing I would have worn ever so slightly differently was that your pendant would have been a peace symbol and the sandals would have been….well….the platform sandals I wore in my recent blog post. No…not the exact same ones but you know what I mean.
Given the number of people I know who have seen Mama Mia II, I think Dancing Queen might be the song of the summer.
I was alive in the 70s, idolizing Marie on Donny & Marie and Cher on Sonny & Cher, dancing in my living room to the BeeGees and rocking out to KISS. But I was too young to wear platform sandals and leg-lengthening flared, high-waisted jeans. I *did* have a pair of Dr. Scholl’s wooden-style mini-platform sandals when I was about 7. They clomped around on hard surfaces and made me feel taller and cool like Farah Fawcett on Charlie’s Angels. My sense of style in that decade was pretty much limited to the Sears catalog and my mom’s ability to sew on patches to holes I got in my jeans when I wrecked my bike, which was often.
I still love your wedge sandals. I hope you’ve kept them because they looked great on you!
Hugs,
Sherry
Tell Sherry I think this outfit is groovalicious! I adore a good pair of ’70s-style flares, bell bottoms, and even elephant legs. I agree, skinny jeans are so 2010. Heh. And so glad the witchy votex, hahaha, didn’t spirograph her into the late ’90s. I hope her hostessing duties give her lots of time to play with her guests as well.
Thank you, Mel! I’ll pass along your message. 🙂 Rest assured the late-90s are still at rest, but there may come a time when that changes! EEK!
So retro groovy and yet so contemporary. The perfect way to style an outfit really.
Glad you are enjoying your summer too much to blog : )

I wanted lots more of your opening video!!! That dress looked especially cute! One you made yourself?
You would have fit into the 70’s vibe very nicely Sherry. I started college in the Fall of 1969 and spent the early 70’s doing my best to maintain the look and attitude of a groovy chick. Your flared jeans and stripey dolman top are far out!! You look fabulous in those flares!!!
I’m not sure I’ve ever lost my love for the Bohemian styles of those socially and politically charged times. I’ve loved the recent ease of revisiting those styles as fashion trends have lingered in the era for quite awhile now.
Thank you, Jude!! ❤️The dress you saw at the beginning of the post was from Suzanne Carillo’s Etsy shop! It’s vintage, dating back to about the 60s we think.
And thank you for the walk down memory lane to your college years! I could totally see you being a groovy chick in the 1970s. Heck, you’re a groovy chick now!
Hugs,
Sherry
Please pass on a message to Sherry from me: she is completely cool and pretty in her wide leg jeans! Love the top, and the time travel, and the music, and you! xox
