Striped Overalls and Butterflies

Slipping into striped overalls fresh off the sewing machine, I steal a button-down butterfly shirt from Hubby’s closet and throw on a pair of old boots. And now, I’m Feelin’ Good.

Birds flying high
You know how I feel
Sun in the sky
You know how I feel
Reeds driftin’ on by
You know how I feel

It’s a new dawn
It’s a new day
It’s a new life
For me
And I’m feeling good
I’m feeling good

~ As sung by Nina Simone

In fact, I’m feeling so good, I’m ready for a hootenanny!

She is wearing striped brown and gray overalls, an oversized button-down shirt with a butterfly pattern, blonde-colored suede cowboy boots. She has a blue floral scarf on her head and she's carrying an antique Kodachrome Instamatic camera. One of her necklaces reads "Wonder Woman."

What’s a hootenanny, you ask?

Why, darlin’, it’s a little ol’ party, packed with music, dance, and fun up to your eyeballs. Here’s some music to set the tone for our hootenanny in overalls:

Overall, These Overalls are Easy

Whether I’m at a hootenanny in the country, eating dinner in the city, or just hanging around the house, these overalls are easy to style. I just throw on any old shirt and a pair of boots and I’m golden.

Sunglasses are good for feeling cool
and reflecting back that sunny day feeling.

My overalls are easy to style, but they’re also easy to sew. I chose the fabric to be the right color and weight so that I can wear them from summer into fall into who knows where.

I used the PDF version of the Jenny Overalls by Closet Case Patterns. It’s a great pattern for beginner sewists like me. And, no, they didn’t pay me to say that. I simply like what I like. And I liked this pattern so much, I made a pair of shortalls as well! (To be seen later at another hootenanny.)

Can you tell I had fun with the stripes?

Grab Your “Instamatic” and Capture the Fun

Because my overalls are so comfy, we can dance from the painted walls of the city to the floral fields of the country. Wherever we go, we’ll find summer waiting to be tasted. Grab your Kodachrome Instamatic (or your smartphone) and capture it all.

Wishing You Sunshine and Love

Thanks for joining my bloggy hootenanny. Wherever you are, I hope you are comfy and surrounded by people who bring just the right amount of sunshine into your life.

Affiliate Links: I didn’t intentionally link in this post to any shops with whom I’m affiliated. As I said, I’m not being paid by Closet Case Patterns to advertise their shop. There are ads and links throughout my blog, however, that when clicked, take you to shops I’m affiliated with. If that happens and you purchase something from those places, I will see a few pennies from that purchase. Those pennies add up sometimes, enough for me to pay for my domain name, download another pattern, or purchase a top from a thrift shop. Whether I see money from a transaction, or you’re just here to read and visit, I thank you for your support.

    1. Thank you, Julie! I have a lot of fun putting videos and such together but, you’re right, it does take a lot of time! That’s why I don’t post regularly! Ha ha!

Wow, Sherry, this is a jolt of sunshine and joy! Love, love the overalls that you created (how great is that?) and the bubbly butterfly shirt.

Nobody sings that soulful song like Nina Simone, nobody. Goose bumps. xox

    1. Thank you, Patti! You are so right about Nina Simone and Feelin’ Good. I hear it and am transported. Total goosebumps every single time! 💕💕💕

  3. Your cute outfit and video are fun, funky and utterly fabulous! Wishing you sunshine and love too, Sherry! xxx

    1. Thank you, Ann! It sounds like you made it home safely. It was fun following along on your adventures! 💕💕💕

How cute are those overalls??? Almost as cute as the fun video you made : P

I’m so impressed with your new found sewing skills Sherry! Working with stripes has to be tough. I’m also really loving hubby’s shirt that you borrowed.

    1. Thank you, Suzanne! I love that shirt and wish it fit me better than it does because I’d steal it for good! Ha ha!

WOW!! Look how much fun you’re having in this completely darling adult romper.
I think I’ve already shared that with each new period of “overall trending” I’ve definitely taken the opportunity to participate! I’m pretty sure I sent you the picture of me sporting my “Eva Trends” overalls last winter???
You look cute as a bug in this handcraftedoutfit!!! Hootenany haute culture!!! I’m proud of you!

    1. Hootenanny haute couture! I love it, Jude! Ha ha ha ha!

I don’t think I did see your Eva Trends overalls from last winter, but I’d love to see them! I can just picture you walking the runway for our version of haute couture! ❤️

  7. Super cool overalls and video! I can’t believe you made those – you obviously have a knack for sewing. And your fabric pattern is matched up so well. Looks like a fun video to edit too, especially with caterpillar action. Thanks for this fun slip into your world.

    1. Thank you, Melanie!! I think of you and Sue whenever I sew because you help inspire the fabrics and patterns I choose and Sue is the sewing genius among us. She and I have talked before about how sewing gives you freedom buying off the rack doesn’t–you can choose everything ahead of time and make what you want! So, I feel like I can tune into my fashion-as-art-as-inspired-by-time-with-Mel whenever I sit down to create something new.

And thanks for your comments about the video! I almost put in a shot of a tiny spider who visited me in my kitchen last year. I named him Henri because he had a French sensibility to him. But some people don’t like seeing spiders, so I left Henri out. Maybe one day….

      Hugs,
      Sherry

  8. Who are you and what have you done with my beginner sewist bestie Sherry?

But seriously Sherry….you have made the most amazing Jenny Overalls!!! The fit is perfection. Your pattern matching is genius! WOW! Really WOWOWWOW!

So. Are you a CCP groupie like me? I really love their patterns!

    1. Thank you, Sue!!!! 💕💕💕 These overalls are really fun to make and CCP makes them easy with their instructions and online tips. It took me a minute to figure out how to do the hardware for the straps, but they had a whole blog post about it online with pics and everything! As a result, I am definitely a CCP groupie like you!

Now I just need to get better at installing invisible zippers. The second time I did it was better than the first, but it still boggles my mind a little whenever I try. And buttonholes! I need to practice those a lot more!

      Hugs,
      Sherry

  9. Rhonda O says:

I look forward to you posts and love your style! What kind of fabric are the coveralls? They look like denim with a tiny bit of stretch? The fit is fab!

    1. Hi Rhonda! Thank you for your kind comment! Are you a sewist, too?

The fabric is cotton canvas by “Famous NYC Designer”–it has a denim-y weight to it with just a tiny, teeny bit of stretch from the nature of the cotton it’s made with. If you’d like to read more about it, I got it at MoodFabrics.com at the following non-affiliated link:

I have some extra left over and am thinking of making a skirt, but I haven’t decided yet.

      Hugs,
      Sherry

Ooo la la – thank you for the mood fabrics link! I’m starting to sew again after a few decades hiatus. I love vintage styles and fabrics.

        1. Oh yay! You are most welcome for the link! How exciting that you’re getting back into sewing! I’m with you on the love of vintage styles and fabrics! Etsy offers a ton of fun options! 💕
