What did you miss most during lockdown? I mean, apart from seeing family and friends? Believe it or not, I missed shopping for groceries without that dark cloud of worry hovering over the experience. More than anything, though, I missed going to the salon to get my hair cut and colored. I longed for the creative experience shared with this other person. Going from basic to bold, from simple to colorful. And, as seen in the photo I created using filters below, I craved pink.
The minute I knew my second vaccine was effective, I christened my return to the realm of the living with a haircut. Laura at Beehive Salon in the Uptown neighborhood in Seattle shaped my hair into a short, playful shag. I love it. We have plans to grow it out longer so I can do more with it.
By the time I went in to get my hair colored, it was completely natural. I had wondered what it looked like under the blonde highlights I lived with for so long. My natural color turned out to be medium brown, with honey tones, if I stood in the right light. There were also a few straggly silver strands with minds of their own. I called them my Scottish sailors because they were feisty, hard to pin down, and swore with a Scottish brogue. Or maybe it was me that swore when I tried to tame them. (For what it’s worth, I do have quite a bit of Scotch blood in me, so I’ve decided I owe these spunky silver locks to my ancestors for no other reason than my imagination says it’s so.)
Hair as Art
Getting one’s hair colored well requires an artist’s eye. To take my shaggy brown locks and turn them into the vibrant strands of copper and pink joy they became requires the hand of a master. Happily, Laura is a master colorist and genius hair artist.
Midway through processing, I had copper low-lights and platinum highlights:
And Then There was Pink Hair!
Once the copper and blonde were in place, Laura added pink all over. The pink shines over the blonde highlights and creates a rose color on top of the copper.
The first thing that struck me about this work of art Laura created was how vibrant the colors are, and yet they’re not in-your-face bold. The copper almost echoes my natural color but makes it even better. And the pink–what’s not to love about Superhero Pink? (That’s what I call it. Because if I was a superhero, I would have pink hair, naturally.)
Now that my hair is cut and colored, I feel like my world just became a little more level. I didn’t realize how much I took these things for granted or how much I would miss them when they were gone. Just goes to show that life really is in the day-to-day pleasures. You are my witnesses as I promise never to take these things for granted again.

Loving the sassy shaggy hairdo, and that pink colour is just perfect!
I did go to the hairdressers a couple of times between lockdowns, but the last one here was a long one, which I took advantage of by growing it a bit longer.
I have missed doing anything outside of my home without that proverbial dark cloud and cannot wait to return to some kind of “normal”. xxx
That dark cloud lurks and lurks. I wonder if we will ever be free from it completely. I suppose talking about hair and fashion helps us feel some sense of normal or a moment of relief from the cloud?
I’ve been seeing you on Instagram and Facebook over this year-plus and all along your hair has been really cute. You must know how to style it well as it grows out. For me, it depends on the style–sometimes it’s easier to style as it gets longer and sometimes harder. 💕
I just love the pink Sherry!! I just saw a friend have a streak of blue right in the front, and I was thinking of doing the same thing (only pink)
