Rockin’ Out in a Red Dress Debbie Harry-Style

When my friend Kelli was a little girl in the 1960s she told her mother she wanted to be a musician. Her mother pointed to the television set and asked, “Do you see any women in the orchestra? No? Women aren’t musicians. Women are secretaries.”

About a decade later, Debbie Harry hit the music scene. She fronted the band Blondie and proved that women can be any kind of musician they want to be. They can even be the lead singer in their own band.

Of course, there were other women doing the same thing at the time. One of the neat things I learned while researching this piece was how Ms. Harry celebrated all women musicians. In a time when the media insisted there could only be just one woman, one Queen of Rock, Debbie invited a group of rockstar women like Chrissi Hynde, Siouxsie Sioux, and Poly Styrene to tea to create a sense of camaraderie and support.

Rock It. Celebrate It.

March 8th was International Women’s Day. I celebrated it listening to old Blondie tunes, rocking out in a red dress.

In full disclosure, I was never a huge fan of Blondie’s music. It’s not to say I didn’t like it. I just didn’t like it enough to buy any of it. But it was so popular, both on radio and MTV, that even now I can sing along with their greatest hits.

One day, when I can’t remember anything else, the lyrics to Rapture will roll off my tongue as if I wrote them myself.

Debbie Harry’s music is part of the soundtrack of my youth. She represents so much more than just one thing. Not only is she truly talented, she made her success seem effortless–as if women had been fronting bands for decades. That’s a powerful thing for a young girl (and their mothers) to see.

I may not win a prize for biggest fan of Blondie, but I will always cheer on women and girls the way Ms. Harry does–never bad-mouthing others and their efforts to find their way.

The Coolness Factor

Part of what makes Ms. Harry so cool is her success against the odds and her support of others. But her style has a lot to say about her coolness factor as well. It is all her own.

In the photo below–the one that inspired my outfit–her look is simple but oh-so-sexy.

This outfit is a pretty good representation of her style overall. She has never worn a lot of patterns. She doesn’t accessorize much. But there is always something that takes her outfit to the next level of cool, like those knee-high stiletto boots she wears in the photo.

My Attempt at Blondie-Style Cool

At 72 years old, Debbie Harry has more sizzle than I ever will and I’m okay with that.

Here she is in 2017 sizzling up the stage.

My attempt at recreating her look is more about honoring what she represents to me–and, as always, having a little fun while doing it.

In the photo below, I kept things simple, just like she did in that photo from 1978. My red dress is a thrifted designer piece. I paired it with black tights and booties and a smattering of jewelry. I can’t pull off the dark eye makeup Ms. Harry is known for, so I kept that simple as well.

In Ms. Harry’s photo, she is surrounded by the tools of her musical trade. Being a fashion blogger, I chose to surround myself with two of the tools of my trade–a laptop and my smartphone.

Here’s a more complete version of this photo. It includes some of the other things a fashion blogger needs: books and magazines about fashion, photos of inspiring others, lighting equipment, shoes, and of course, clothes. (That coat is a favorite from Suzanne Carillo’s Etsy shop. It was featured last year in another post about adventures in fashion.)

The Outfit

If you follow my blog, you may recall seeing this dress last fall when I wrote about Sell Your Sole Consignment here in Seattle. It’s a stretchy red Yigal Azrouël dress with leather trim on the shoulders and a light, lacy pattern throughout.

I say it stretches, but when I tried to kick-it old school while rocking out, I didn’t get very far.

Even so, the dress stretches around my meager curves and makes me feel pretty darn good.

Here’s a back view:

My black shoes and tights are old, old, old. It’s a wonder the tights have stayed with me so long. The shoes are originally from the Sundance Catalog.

Keep On Rockin’

The moral of my story can be summed up this way: No matter what anyone else says about my gender, I gotta keep on rockin’.

Debbie Harry’s success reminds me to chase after my greatest curiosities and define success in ways that speak to my core. It takes courage to do this, but the path has already been paved, so I have it just a little easier than my predecessors. All I have to do is stay on that path and rock out Sherry-style. And if I can support others along the way, that makes the journey even richer.

With that, I will leave you with the wise words of Bill & Ted, another 80s icon:

Be excellent to each other. And party on, dudes!

    1. Patti, just an idea, but you could totally rock Debbie Harry’s look in Vancouver this summer! 🙂

      Hugs,
      Sherry

  4. You rock, girl!! I love how you pulled off Debbie’s look, but made it entirely your own. I was more into boy groups than girls, although, now I like a more diverse palette. The only song of hers that I remember well is, “One Way or Another.” Ha, ha. Hope you are having a great weekend! – Amy

    1. I was like you, Amy. I was obsessed with Michael Jackson and Duran Duran around the time Blondie was topping the charts with their tunes. Which is why I was so surprised how well I remembered their Best Of tunes when I listened to the playlist on Spotify! I guess some things seep in even when you don’t know it. But then, I listened to the radio constantly as a kid and watched MTv as much as my parents would allow.

I hope you had a great weekend too!

      Hugs,
      Sherry

This red dress looks so cute and sexy on you Sherry! I’m hoping that you and your husband went out and painted Seattle the same color following this shoot!
Although Debra Harry was definitely on my radar it wasn’t during a time in my life that I was seeking her kind of vibe/alter ego? in my life. I remember thinking that she was uniquely representing womanhood in a way that was more intriguing to me than Madonna’s pitch. I’d been teaching for about 7 years and was nearing the big three-O. I was probably on an entirely different wave length.
Your choice of blog/fashion themes is always unpredictable, imaginative and enlightening. I always feel both entertained and educated! I LOVE that!! I feel that you commit as much heart and soul as you do to time doing research for these blogging gems! I’m thinking that you would have been an incredible teacher my dear friend!!
    Rock On- Lady in Red!!!

    1. I take your teacher comment as a very great, compliment, Jude! And out of everything you said, that means more to me because I know how you value your time as a teacher and all those kids you were/are so devoted to.

But of course, I loved your other comments as well! <3 It makes me happy to know that the work I do entertains you and even brings new thoughts to your thoughtful mind. I owe you an email and have been thinking about you a ton. More to come ASAP. I hope all is well out your way!

Take your time on that e-mail my friend. I know that you’re a busy woman fanning flames of growth on the fire. How are your classes going???

  6. …sigh…Sherry, you can’t be the biggest fan of Blondie. BECAUSE I AM! LOLOL

I love this post. Mostly because I love Blondie…no seriously, you’ve brought up such good points, especially now. I mean, I can not imagine telling a young girl, or anybody, that they couldn’t be or do something that they wanted to…

You! You are rockin’ the red girl. This dress really suits you!

Loving your hair too. I love my curls but sometimes I wish for a real fringe.

    1. Ha ha ha ha! Sue, you don’t have to worry. Your title as Biggest Fan of Blondie is still in your very capable hands. I love Blondie’s music for the nostalgia it brings me but I couldn’t listen to it everyday. I was obsessed with Duran Duran and Michael Jackson as a teenager. I hope to create some looks around these musicians as well, but Debbie Harry is just so stylish and cool I had to play with her first.

It is strange to think now, in this day and age, a mother would tell her daughter she couldn’t be something because she was female but I do think it still happens, even on a subconscious level. Like, telling boys they are rambunctious because they are boys and telling rambunctious girls to quiet down and get it together. (I use that as an example because I saw it recently.)

Anyway, this post was a lot of fun to put together. Thank you for the kind comments about the outfit and my hair. You must know by now that I have longed for curls my whole life. (In my Duran Duran and MJ days, I got perms!) I’ve come to terms with my straight hair. The fringe can be quite fun and is something I hadn’t tried for decades before now.

      Hugs,
      Sherry

  7. Of course I was a huge fan of Blondie! What an icon she was for me in my teens! She looks fantastic in red and so do you!

    1. Thank you, Nancy! Debbie Harry is such an inspiration in so many ways.

Truth in every way, shape and form, Sherry!! We gotta keep rockin’ and we can be fierce about it no matter what age our license says!!!
Love that red dress and the kick in it!!!
I have to admit, that I wasn’t a huge music fan at all—but you have to love it when women do what says can’t be done….

    1. You know, it Jodie! You, Nancy, and Charlotte teach this lesson every week on your blog! You all rock it and knock the socks off anyone paying a bit of attention. Like you said, you gotta love it when women break down those walls.

      Keep rockin’, Jodie!!

      Hugs,
      Sherry
